WHAT

Often, the first impulse we receive  is the magic one. "Instant performance" develops your innate capacity  to give life to something that is fully formed from the moment you transmit it.  We then follow that initial impulse to lead you toward generating substantive  work of lasting value.

In order for the originator of solo work to successfully captivate and hold an audience, rigorous demands must be met but also unique opportunities for invention are offered.  These intensive workshops  explore how solo performance methods - of conjuring character, inventing natural speech and locating the stories inspired by place, passion and imagery - can be applied to generating vital writing  and to infusing performance with live-wire authenticity.

For  playwrights, solo show originators, actors, and writers of fiction, memoir and drama, this is writing on the tongue and stage, as an addition to, and rejuvenation, of writing on the page.

Writers will  generate and refine material in

Writing Down the Voices. And performers will perform a 10-minute  piece for Solo Performance:

There will be a shared reading/performance event.

  Register soon: class-sizes are limited!

 Register by May 3rd: Solo$390/Writing$225
After May 3rd: Solo$450/Writing $275

Heather is an award-winning performer and writer known for her convention-bending solo and ensemble works, which combine the immediacy of performance art with a novel's scope.

Her  current piece, As The Globe Warms,  is an online video novel created in the course of 34 weeks of live performance.

Her 8-part, 100-character solo play, What Ever: An American Odyssey  (published by Faber/Farrar, Strauss & Giroux) was hailed as a "Whitmanesque vision of America" [Chicago Sun-Times] and  "a masterwork of the solo form" by the NY Times.   It was adapted as a radio play hosted by Ira Glass.

Woodbury is the recipient of numerous awards for  performance and writing; In 2006 she was awarded the inaugural Spalding Gray Award honoring writer/performers who are "fearless innovators." Performing in her ensemble play Tale of 2Cities: An American Joyride on Multiple Tracks, she won a 2007 OBIE (Outstanding Achievement in Off-Broadway Production) for  performance.

Heather  has taught  classes in  Solo Performance, Character, Playwriting, Acting and Storytelling at the University of Chicago, NYU,  A.S.K. Theatre Projects, Northeastern University, St. Edward's University, University of New Mexico, ABQ and East Tennessee State. She has conducted performances and lectures for students at Yale, SMU, Northwestern, UCLA and NYU.

She was Master-Artist-in-Residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts.
